RESUMO

The advanced industry of information technology has been utilizing a large amount of synthetic quartz for electronic devices, such as resonators, wave filters, oscillators, SA W (Surface Acoustic Waves) devices. One important condition for these applications is the high perfection of synthetic quartzo Therefore, the progress of this area is closely related with the development of synthetic quartz properties, and consequently, with seed technology for growing perfect and large crystals. The aim of this research is to obtain through the employment of special geometry cuttings of seed, an improvement of synthetic quartz crystals, in terms of: (i) decreasing or eliminating dislocation lines; (ii) the reconstitution or re-growing seed regions with Dauphiné twins. In this context, the application of fast growth in + X direction will open new perspectives to obtain seeds of great dimensions from natural quartzo Besides the technological aspect, there is a strong social and economical interest for this country, due to the fact that the largest and the best quartz reserve of piezoelectric grade big blocks are situated in Brazil. This strategic quartz resource has been exported in natura with no processing. For the development of this research, a scientific collaboration was conducted between the Laboratory of Integrated Quartz Cyc1e (LIQC), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UNICAMP, and Fine Crystal Co., Japan, where the synthetic quartz was hydrothermally grown. The used seed in this experiment was totally prepared in LIQC, using a series of know-how we have developed during the last fifieen years. Very well characterized quartz bars containing 400, 100, and 30 dislocation lines/cm2 where used for the seed preparation. X-ray diffiaction topography used for the characterization of as-grown synthetic quartz crystals shows that the elimination of dislocation lines, and the re-growing of imperfect regions (after cutting out) were very effective
