RESUMO

This work was developed in the Work-Health Education/Nutrition Education line of research and is linked to the Grupo A3EN (Group of Support, Improvement an Updates in Nutrition Education), certified by the CNPq. In the context of health promotion, healthy eating has great prominence, as it is considered one of the pre-requisites for health. The school is a privileged place for the development of healthy eating habits, but in order to reach this objective, there is the necessity to research strategies in nutrition education that make it possible to contribute to the formation of citizens with autonomy and critical awareness about their eating habits. The objective of this research was to identify and analyse practices, norms, opinions, attitudes and representations related to eating habits/school meals, together with those socially involved with the school. The results will make it possible to provide support for the elaboration of public policies in the area of health promotion, education and food security. The research method used was qualitative. The survey was carried out in a rural school in the municipality of Valinhos-SP, having as subjects, 11 teachers and 4 employees. The collection of data was by means of non-structured, focussed interview, and participative observation. The technique used for dealing with the data was hermeneutic-dialectic, which seeks to understand the meaning which is given in communication between human beings, with emphasis on mediation, agreement, the unity of meaning, concomitantly with difference, contrast, disagreement and breakdown of meaning. The results of the work were organized in four categories based on the analysis of the representations of those interviewed about eating habits/school meals: the hunger of the pupils, the school meal, promotion of health and nutrition education in school, and consumption of fruit, vegetables and legumes. It is concluded that the school as well as school meals constitute an important means of socialization and of existence for the pupils, but it is still necessary to demystify the objectives attributed by teachers and employees to the school meal, which are a consequence of their social representations about the hunger and the standard of living of the pupils. In relation to health promotion and nutrition education, although there are iniciatives, these are still permeated with contraditions, resulting from the lack of preparation of the teachers to deal with the subject
