RESUMO

This text intends to investigate discursive and non-discursive webs that produced new ways of looking and seeing the city of Campina Grande by its inhabitants, informed by a modern sensibility, in the early decades of twentieth century. We looked for the traces that produced various aspects of the urban life, allowing the emergency and hegemony of this modern sensibility. This way, we criticized local historiography concerning modern age studies, trying to escape from material dimension matter relation modernity to modernization. We propose a new possibility on this matter concerning to Campina Grande, analyzing it by Enlightenment symbolic promises, specially the intention of overcoming the natural world dependention by mankind, movement represented by human intervention on nature through culture/science. We elected the pasteurization milk matter, in 1935, as primary event on our narrative, constructing it as a symbolic occurrence in consolidation of this new sensibility, because there we can see some traces which construct the modern and urban age idea, such as scientific and technical development, country versus city dichotomy and the intention of producing a modern age body, productive and controlled.
