RESUMO

The question of sustainability has been one of the most relevant subjects in the agenda of Non-Governmental Organizations NGOs during the last decades. The interest and the progress in the approach to the issue has been expressed in the form of attempts to understand how NGOs achieve their sustainability, not limiting themselves to economic and financial dimensions. In this sense, this work tries to understand the dynamics and the workings of one specific organization that operates in the social field and that concentrates around itself a large number of actors who interact to guarantee its sustainability. That purpose was achieved through a case study supported by Karl Polanyi`s principles of substantive conception of the economy. Employing the research techniques of interviews, focal groups and direct observation, it has been possible to identify how such principles manifest themselves in the organization`s daily life. Following the examination of the data collected, made possible by an analysis chart prepared in line with the studies of Karl Polanyi, Guerreiro Ramos and Mauricio Serva, it was shown that the sustainability emerges from the actions of reciprocity, substantiating the concept of social sustainability such as presented in Daniel Pinheiro`s study. Such actions constitute the strengthening of the social links of several actors with the institution, as well as an important instrument for the attraction of the resources necessary for its maintenance and development. It has also been possible to show how the organization`s institutional mission is deeply rooted in social concerns an important factor for the involvement of many people in actions aimed at sustainability.
