RESUMO

The search for harmony between industrial production, nature and social demands of quality of life reveals an urgent need in reframing the product design projects, which essentially implies the generation of mass and directly influences the natural environment, requiring broader considerations beyond the economic perspective and responding to social, cultural, environmental, and technological perspectives at the same time. On the other hand, the evaluation of design process requires the need of qualifying design actions under the sustainability and social responsibility approaches in order to obtain more adequate patterns of production related to social and environmental impacts, mostly throughout a significant methodological change in the way we develop products. This doctoral thesis proposes the implementation of a model aimed in evaluating the design process, adopting a set of indicators of Design, Sustainability and Social Responsibility (IDSRS), contributing to the improvement of product design process, acting directly on the visualization of aspects of the productive system that are inadequate in terms of a sustainable and socially responsible way of doing business. The model of indicators and the IDSRS index are developed and applied to the productive systems of two different Brazilian companies, both considering design as a relevant tool of idealization and development of products, more specifically the Rosita Toys and Natura Cosmetics, through the case study method. An important conclusion of this thesis points out the fact that the IDSRS model contributes to a methodological adaptation of the design process, considering patterns of sustainability and social responsibility from the very beginning of design projects, trying to achieve the goals of industry together with achieving demands of quality of life and respecting the environment as whole.
