RESUMO

This study focuses on a superquadra of the Brasilia Pilot Plan, its conceptual bases and subsequent urbanistic realization, and the place it occupies in the history of the organization of human habitation. The chapter entitled Some Precedents covers the main urbanistic ideas of the Renaissance, 19th century urbanistic and architectural practices and the main modernist prescriptions and realizations of the first half of the 20th century. The chapter A New Capital interprets the process of implementation of the Brasilia Pilot Plan within the Brazilian context, in order to provide an understanding of the Brasilia urban design and guidelines of Lúcio Costa for the residential sector, as set forth in the Pilot Plan Report document. The chapter Time and Urban Planning, in turn, shows how the spatial concept of the superquadra idealized by Lúcio Costa was transposed to reality, seeking to accompany the evolution of its urban conformation from the beginning of the construction of the city, through the consolidation period, to the more recent projects, which try out new morphologies. The chapter Urbanistic Aspects analyses some superquadra categories from the standpoint of their internal circulation, the division of the inner spaces and urban equipment, the organization of the buildings, the various types of buildings, an other components. Lastly, the chapter A new way of living addresses some significant housing projects for the purpose of showing their importance in defining a sort of standard typology for residential buildings in Brasilia.
