RESUMO

A main question comes up from the following conjecture: how was the concept of the self modified throughout times and how can it subsist in contemporaneity? This question is seconded by others that complete it. Is there a correlation between such concept and the means of production? In what way do philosophical conceptions cause transformations in the conception of the world and, in consequence, in its management? From the point of view of Political Philosophy, how would it be possible to resist to the late transformations of the concept and of its corresponding transformation in production relations? Would it be possible to form a collective subject apt to get a more just and equanimous world? The answer to these investigations have gone through necessary paths: to give an account of the historical process of the constitution of the self and of its later disconstruction it was necessary to understand how the question was tackled in the different stages of development of (Antique and Contemporary) Philosophy, giving emphasis to Illuminism as the period of its disaggregation and lack of importance to some theoreticians, its resurgence with the retaking of the question of the body and the strengthening for its reconstruction in the last decades of the past century. It was pointed out that the neo-liberal eagerness for social atomization and the subjects discentrament to avoid the sprouting of collective citizens capable to modify societys management. In order to make a more consistent theoretical structuration possible, one tried to show the difference between the fields of Culture and Civilization, appreciating their formative process and indicating that both fields consist of symbolic adaptable systems which depend on institutions such as school, family and social relationships to be able to instrument social changes, not only to keep the relationships of domination but also to transform them. A historical excursus was presented to suggest the civilizatory process capable to influence the dominant culture and to keep it linked with commandments and general rules of behavior. History was said to be the account established by historians of the tensions between the projects of Culture and the possibility of Civilization accomplishment, with all consequent tensions and breakdowns in the identity sphere. The work was assumed to be one of the main focuses of the contemporary subjects formation of identity and the globalization scenery was investigated in order to find out any possible routes and exits for the Man of this time
