RESUMO

The aim of this study was to study the discrepancy between the areas of initial apical instrument (IAI) and major foramen of central maxillary incisives by scanning electronic microscopy. Fifty teeth received cervical preparation with LA Axxess drills. K-files were then introduced in root canal, in gradual increase of diameter, until tactile adjustment one millimeter from the apical foramen. Next, they were introduced into apical foramen and fixed with metil-cianoacrilate. Tooth/file set was cut on medium third with a doublefaced diamond disc and the apices were observed under scanning electronic microscope. The relation of files and apical foramen areas was analyzed in computer by means of Image Tool software. Results were submitted to statistical analysis by unpaired t-student test. There is a significant statistical discrepancy (p<0,0001) between areas of the initial apical file and the apical foramen of maxillary central incisors. The apical foramen medium area was 28134198205 μm2 and the instrument area was 7612925677 μm2. It was observed that oval shape of major foramen was the most frequent, presented in 62% of the cases; 34% were circular and 4% without a defined form. Lateral open of the foramen in relation to radicular apex was detected the in 88% of the specimens and 12% match with the apex. It was concluded that the area of the major foramen is 3.8 times higher than the initial apical instrument.
