RESUMO

The present study analyzed the stress on registered nurses (RN) and their relation to different departments of a hospital as well as it was established a connection to individuals? sleep-wake cycle. The aims were to analyze the relation between stress and nurses? sleeping characteristics who work on different hospital departments on morning, afternoon and night shifts; to verify the stress level of nurses who work on Emergency Room, Intensive Care Unit, Surgery and Material Center and several Infirmaries; to characterize the stressors on different departments; to compare nurses? stress level and sleep score to social-demographic variables; to describe the sleep-wake cycle characteristics and to correlate them to sleep and stress on different departments. This was a comparative, descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative study which was performed in a hospital in Campinas city, Brazil. In order to make the data collecting, it was used an identification chart, Bianchi Stress Scale Modified (BSSm) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Two-hundred and three (203) subjects were studied from morning, afternoon and night shifts. Most of the interviewed subjects were females (88. 2%) and their mean age was 39 years old and 17.7% of them used sleeping pills (benzodiazepines). Nurses? sleep score was 6.76 (poor sleep quality) and stress score was 2.60 (medium stress level). There has been a meaningful correlation between stress and sleep (Spearman Analysis ? r= 0.21318; p= 0.0026). There has not been a meaningful difference among the departments when compared to stress score (Mann-Whitney Test ? p= 0.244). Medical Surgery Infirmary I showed meaningful values (p= 0.027) using Fisher Exact Test, when compared the stress level scores to sleep quality. On Medical Surgery Infirmary I, all the nurses (100%) with low stress level showed good sleep quality, whereas 73.3% of them with high stress level presented poor sleep quality. Nurses who used sleeping pills showed a PSQI score of 12.33 and the nurses who do not used them presented a PSQI score of 5.56. It was concluded that the study results suggest that the stress level was a factor directly correlated to sleep, showing that the higher is the stress score, the worse is the sleep quality. Nonetheless, on this study the use of sleeping pills led to a worse sleep quality of the nurses
