RESUMO

Although heat transfer in welding is a fairly well studied topic, there is not much literature about multipass process, necessary for the welding of thick plates, which are generally used as primary components of weldments. During multipass welding process, the material undergoes quick cycles of heating and cooling, and the heat affected zone ( HAZ ) suffers the action of differents thermal cycles, which modify its microstructure. It is important to know the temperature distribution in the HAZ, because the mechanical properties of weldment will depend on the resulting microstructure in this region. In this work, analytical models were developed for the temperature distribution in multiple pass welding process, in the heat flow one-dimensional and two-dimensional. The models allow temperature determination at any position and time. They also allow determine the thermal cycle at any specified position, for any weld pass, which can avoid the need of interpass preheating for the microstructure controI. The models were verified through the butt welding of AISI 304L stainless steel plate, measuring 13 x 100 x 200 mm, "V"-bevel, and three passes ofweld deposited through GMAW. The interpass time was equal to 60 seconds. The thermal cycles were obtained by means of an acquisition system connected to a microcomputer and to thermocouples PtIPt-Rh, which were inserted in small holes arranged at three different depths. A good accord between thermal cycles theorectical and experimental was verified. The analytical models allow to verify the influence of the various parameters in the multipass welding process, through the changes of these parameters in the solutions obtained. Moreover, the models are useful as comparison standard for the numerical and experimental methods, which always involve errors
