RESUMO

From a sociological perspective and, in particular, from point of view of the Sociology of Knowledge this work analyses the early years of the construction of the field of urban anthropology in Brazil in the 70 s, working with categories such us "city", "scientific field", "generation" and "school of thought". The city was the place of research for a generation of anthropologist devoted to urban groups. For analytical porpoises, the field of urban anthropology was divided in two levels: a theoretical and research one. The theoretical level was influenced by tree schools of thought: Chicago School in Sociology, Manchester School in Anthropology and the French Marxist School of Urban Sociology. The research level is compose by a corpus of works on urban ethnology seeking for a urban subject living in the city and bis way of life, social organization and collective representations. The methodological procedure to analyze the field was build on two different empirical materiais: one documental and the other oral. The documental formed for bibliography, documents and published interviews, and the oral compose for oral interviews, with objective obtained generational memory. Eight anthropologist, dedicated to urban groups, conform the population of the study universe. They currently belong to tree universities, Museu Nacional-UFRJ-, Universidade de São Paulo and UNICAMP; the tree principal main centers of urban anthropological studies in Brazil nowadays
