RESUMO

This research intends to contribute to the reflection about the human dignity in the process of dying. The subject is approached in a philosophical perspective, using the contributions of Karl Jaspers and Hans Jonas. The perspectives of the bio-ethics about the subject of death come from authors of this area. In the first place, it examines the present context of the approach of death, and the importance of the use of Art for the study, leading to the opening of a channel for reflection and the transformation of values. Secondly, the philosophical contributions of Karl Jaspers about the subject, such like the reflection about limit-situations, authentic life, clarifying of the existence and responsibility. This latter subject, responsibility, has been analyzed since the philosophical reflection of Hans Jonas. It also presents a short description of how the conception of human dignity was developed from different and complementary perspectives of the actual discussion. It analyzes the concept according to the Christian pattern, to the juridical expression, to the morals of Kant and as foundation of bio-ethics. And last but not least, it approached the bio-ethical discussions about the end of human life. Distinctions about euthanasia, disthanasia and orthothanasia are necessary in this discussion to introduce a change from a paradigm of cure to one of care. It concludes that it is necessary to create units of palliative care which will attend and respect the human dignity of terminal patients without therapeutic possibilities according to a relating model of attendance.
