RESUMO

This dissertation investigates how an information system can contribute to improving the management of the public passenger transit. The choice of topic is justified by the need to reduce the deficiencies in the management and operation aimed at improving the quality of service with less cost. The main objective is to propose an information system that meets the needs of the operational planning of a System of Public Transit Passenger (STPP) supplied by data generated through new methods and research techniques. The conceptual framework is the importance of information systems for operational planning and how new technologies are helping to achieve automated operational data quickly and reliably. The study area refers to the STPP in the Metropolitan Region of Recife - STPP / RMR, managed by Empresa Metropolitana de Transportes Urbanos - EMTU / Recife. The methodology consisted of a literature review on the meaning of information for organizations. With the knowledge acquired was possible to analyze information systems deployed in EMTU / Recife, evaluate the current situation and propose a new system to meet the information needs of the manager agency. The daily use of public transport was used as a way to identify the problems faced by users and that the manager supervises the sample form. Research was carried out in order to have an overview of the methods used in planning and operational control of public passenger transport in the country. The survey found that the electronic ticketing systems are being used by about 70% of cities surveyed, althought other automated systems also are starting to be introduced in Brazil. This work concludes on the need for investment in information management and technology to provide better and better control and monitoring of operational performance in order to provide, at a lower cost, higher quality of service offered
