RESUMO

Agricultural activities and wood exploitation either in natural or planted forests in Brazil, generate a large amount of vegetables residues, along with the main product. Usually these residues have not a correct use, being in most of the times either burned or abandoned on the field, becoming this way an energy waste, that should be used more conveniently, otherwise, in some regions of the country there is a large consumption of solid fuels, specially for domestic use (wood arid charcoal) and steel manufacturing (charcoal and imported coke, as a carbon source) purposes. This work aims to study the possibility of making feasible the rational use of agricultural and forest residues, so wood, charcoal, and coke would be partially replaced, looking for, the decrease of the exploitation rate of natural forests and importation of similar products. The experimental work was developed using high pressures and temperatures for processing of agricultural and forestry residues, which have some economic importance for the country, by using the appropiate equipment. Briquettes were prepared through compactation and pirolysis for future analysis to obtain their main energy properties, and comparing with other fuels. These processes aim decreasing the most important problems arised by the utilization of residues namely: low density and calorific value, high moisture, and lack of geometrical form. It will be also shown, a first aproach to evaluate the available residues for processing in sugar and alcohol, steel manufacturing, wood transfonnation sectors, and so on, as well as processes estimated costs and potential markets in those areas
