RESUMO

This work presents the development and application of a reservoir simulation method, based on a variable ando auto-adaptive implicit formulation. The variable implicitness formulation is based on a general approach of reservoir simulation methods, already presented in the literature. In such approach a basic leveI of implicitness for alI methods is recognized which yields a basic Jacobian matrix. The change from this basic levei to a more implicit one is performed with the addition of "correction matrices". The local application of these corrections to each gridblock is the basis for the formulation described in this work. The method here presented differs from those already given in the literature in that it does not directly focuses on the elimination of grid celI unknowns, to compose the final matrix problem. Rather it focuses on the minimum leveI of implicitness to be localIy given to the non-linear difference equations to ensure stability. Under such apprbach various levels of implicitness are possible, ranging from IMPES type to FulIy Implicit. . A switching criteria for the automatic assignment of implicitness in each celI along the simulation time was implemented. It considers only IMPES and fulIy implicit type celIs and is based on stability analysis previously presented in the literature for the IMPES formulation. A sparse-matrix method was adapted to solve the resulting linear systems of equations. The method alIows an arbitrary ordering of the equations and unknowns. Such capability was particularly useful to take advantage of the matrix-structure of equations that results in applications of the auto-adaptive implicit method. FinalIy, two applications are presented. By using special displays we demonstrate the degrees of implicitness in each celI and how they shift in space and time cduring simulation. Information regarding the savings in computer time and storage with a fixed, fully implicit procedure is also presented
