RESUMO

Recent developments in completion and drilling technology have increased the interest of the oil industry in horizontal wells. Such wells are primarily indicated for thin oil reservoirs associated with a gas cap or a bottom water zone, where vertical wells have productivity impaired by the formation of water or gas cones. The main purpose of this work is to present a finite difference numerical simulator for horizontal wells, based on the use of a local refinement technique. The radial multiphase How close to the well is more realistically represented through the use of a cylindrically oriented grid blocks. The outer region of the r,eservoir, where the How regime is predominatily linear, is modelled by regular cartesian blocks. The connection between the well and reseryoir regions was implemented con sidering two approaches: in the coupled approach the radial/ cartesian system is solved simultaneously, while in the uncoupled the reservoir region is solved first, followed by the solution of the well region at each time-step or at each Newtonian iteration. The validation of the model was done through comparison of the numerical results with analitycal ones in the transient How regimes. The coupling and matrix solution methods as well as some results of the simulation runs are discussed in this work
