RESUMO

This thesis reports the results of an experimental simulation of the first stage of cooling in the continuous casting of metals. Experiments performed in water-cooled static casting assemblies, with non-ferrous metals, were used to evaluate the thermal, kinetic and structural parameters of this initial step of solidification in the process. The experimental data obtained with two different assemblies, in each case, are compared with the theoretical predictions for the following topics: Kinetics of solidification in the mould, temperature distribuition in the metal-mould system and variation of the secondary dendrite arm spacing. Ingot columnar structure inclination and variation of the overall heath transfer coefficient of the metal-coqling fluid system. These predictions are given by mathematical models and by associations of these models with experimental equacions,in terms of through variables of the continuous casting process. A satisfactory agreement between the correspondent values is found to exist, allowing to consider this simulation as an indirect and relatively simple way to evaluate critical parameters on the control of this process
