RESUMO

Eutrophication of water bodies is caused by high concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen, leading to water quality declining. Accordingly, there is a concern to evaluate the quality of water for public supply. This research aims to show the dynamic behavior of the concentrations of these nutrients, dissolved oxygen and water temperature in Descoberto Lake which is the main reservoir of public water supply and environment of the Distrito Federal and neighboring cities, corresponding to approximately 65% of water distributed in the region. The research covered the end of period 2003 to early 2005. The model CEQUAL- W2 was used for developing the experimental research. CE-QUAL-W2 is a twodimensional model, laterally averaged, for analysis of hydrodynamics and water quality of water bodies. The program uses, among other tools, the concepts of fluid mechanics, modeling by finite differences and environmental flows. Another objective of this study was to evaluate the model applicability and the consistency of results for subsequent applications in scenarios predictions. The hydraulic results had a good representation in simulations with the Manning coefficient of 0.04, obtaining average absolute error of 0.34 m for the elevation of water level of the reservoir during the period modeled. In general, the results of water quality parameters had a satisfactory adjustment in comparisons of those observed with simulated data. Finally, the results indicate a satisfactory applicability of the model to obtain predictions of scenarios regarding the quality of water from the Descoberto Lake and other research.
