RESUMO

The goal of this thesis is to comprehend Siivio Romero s (1851-1914) interpretation of Brazil, which is condensed in his thought and can be found in his work. His most important book -Historia da literatura brasilera." piece edited in four volumes and published in 1888, is more of a sociological effort than it is a literary history. In this book, the main topic is not only the country s literary production, but also the nation itsel.f The book deals with what I call the theory of Brazil. It introduces Brazilian society and culture as inexorably mixed-raced, founded on the bases of three races whites, blacks and indigens. However, Brazil must be understood as a whitened and culturally westernized country. The mixed-race image of the country was formulated with the influence of scientific evolutionist theories derived from Eurocentric racial presumptions. The constructionof a romantic image of Brazil- given the fact that Romero viewed Brazil s national essence as based on its people - affected and oriented the way the author interpreted various aspects of the country, from literature to popular culture and European immigration, though his discourse was dressed up with scientific rhetoric. He dreamed of progress and modernity being conjugated with the authenticity of the Brazilian culture. Romero interpreted very different topics, such as Machado de Assis s literary work and the German immigration to the South of the country, through the lenses of his own nationalistic perspective. He criticized both Machado de Assis and the German communities for having denied the very essence of Brazilian nationalism. Certain aspects ofthe author s interpretations,such as the search for Brazilian authenticity in its popular culture, and the perception of the country as a mixed-race heir, reappear, with some changes, in the works of authors identified with the esthetical and historical renovation of the 20 s and 30 s, such as Mário de Andrade and Gilberto Freyre
