RESUMO

Making a considerable impact on both Brazilian workers? health and the national social security system, Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs)/ Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) have their origins in osteoarticular injuries, the complexity of hich has paralleled the deep changes in the work and the work relations throughout history. This work is aimed at phenomenologically, socially and politically grasping the illness experience from the viewpoint of the disabled body? by drawing on ?illness xperience? and ?disease narratives?. Thematic analysis? of in-depth interviews with Brazilian workers receiving Social Security compensation was used to build the illness plots, which ranged from the workers? own acknowledgement of their condition before sickness, followed by their early perceptions of the disability together with the initial coping strategies, to more pragmatic resistance actions and metaphorical constructions pointing to processes aimed at legitimizing their disability. The sense and meaning produced by those experiences, which also denoted macrosocial processes embodied in everyday life senses, require a holistic view that is dialectically combined with strategies valuing intersubjective approaches on the disability in RSI/WRMSD.
