RESUMO
The objective of this study was to assess the efficiency of the simulated individual BLUP (BLUPIS) method in selecting genotypes within families of full sibs of sugarcane in the plant-cane and ratoon stages, through comparison with selection using the individual BLUP method (BLUPI). In parallel, the optimal number of genotypes to be selected in the best family will be established for four assessed characteristics. Seventeen full sibs families were assessed in the Center for Experimentation in Sugarcane (CECA), located in Oratórios, MG, Brazil, in the ratoon stage. Variables used for validation of the BLUPIS method were mean stems mass (MSM), total soluble solids assay (BRIX), ton of stems per hectare (TSH) and tons of Brix per hectare (TBH). Mixed model equations were used to estimate the genotipic values of each family and genotipic values of each individual within the family (BLUPI). BLUPIS method was efficient in genotypes selection within full sibs families of sugarcane in the ratoon stage when compared to the selection performed by individual genotypic values foreseen via BLUPI for the assessed characteristics. The optimal numbers of genotypes, to be selected in the best family by obtaining the higher efficiency of BLUPIS method with the selection by BLUPI, in the plant-cane stage, were 50 plants for MSW, 100 for TSH and TBH, and 120 for BRIX. For the ratoon stage the optimal number of genotypes was 100 for the characteristics assessed. However, the obtained results are relevant only for this work, being necessary to assess a larger number of experiments for possible generalization of the optimal number of genotypes to be selected in the best full sib family for the characteristics assessed.
