RESUMO

The taxonomic given to the genus Mollinedia comprises 72 species. These species include trees and shrubs occuring in forest ecossystems, more frequently represented in the undestory with occasional individuals reaching the canopy level. Geographic distribution of the Mollinedia species includes three areas: Southern Mexico America (11 species), Northern South America (24 species) and Northeastern, Southeastern and Southern Brazil (37 species). Mollinedia can be distinguished from the other genera of the Mollinedieae tribe that occur in the Neotropical Region its calyx length being equal to the hypanthoid receptacle length; in all other genera the calyx is shorter or longer. A study of 1500 herbarium specimes and associated field observations showed a close affinity among the Mollinedia species, and stressed the difficulty in seeting species limits. This was made possible by the use of vegetative and floral features. A key for identification of Neotropical Mollinedieae genera is presented as well as for Mollinedia species. Synonymy, description, distribution, habitat, vernacular names and herbarium specimes are presented for each species. Floral biology was studied for some species and economic uses and chromosome number registerd for others. Six new species are described and 16 are regarded as new synonyms. M. ovata Ruiz et Pavon is chooser as the type species of the genus Mollinedia
