RESUMO

Recently, the interests towards duckweed-based-ponds utilization are due to the fact that these systems present high nutrient and algae removal efficiencies, producing high protein biomass. The present work was developed at The Wastewater Treatment Plant from Florianópolis (Casan) and divided into three trials. The first and second trials were conducted at the Pilot Reuse System and the third one, at the Duckweed Polishing Pond. The results obtained have shown that duckweeds presented a satisfactory pollutants removal, reaching adequate criteria for aquaculture. Duckweed biomass was collected and fed to tilapias in the dried and pelletized forms, however, the biomass production was influenced by the temperature. Fish performance was measured and it was observed that fish fed pelletized duckweed have shown great performance, similar to fish fed ration. Through economical comparative analysis it can be affirmed that tilapias farming in reuse systems fed duckweeds promotes twice as the profit usually obtained in conventional systems. Microbiological analysis confirmed that fish is free of pathogenic organisms, according to the food legislation criteria applied. Toxicology tests have shown that fish presented micronuclei cells and the wastewater caused genotoxic effects into their bodies. However, through analysis of variance it was concluded that micronuclei cells were in low frequency, presenting no statistical difference from fish farmed in clean water. Histopathological analysis using gills as an indicator, have shown that the effluent is somehow harmful due to the damage found in fish gills. These results will be relevant for future projects related to wastewater treatment and tilapia farming sustainability. The reuse of the effluent from duckweed based ponds in fish farming is a feasible alternative, because it can reduce the environmental impact caused by the domestic wastewater treatment, producing high protein feed.
