RESUMO

The excess of nutrients found in domestic or industrial wastewaters, like nitrogen and phosphorus, may lead to a process of eutrofication and originate adverse effects to the environment and to the human health. For this reason it is very important to consider an advanced treatment of those wastewaters when dealing with water resources, including their reuse when water availability is poor. The objective of this work was to remove nitrogen ttom domestic wastewaters in a bench-scale activated sluge sequencing batch reactor, through biological nitrification and denitrification processes. Ali fill periods were performed with mechanical mixing and without aeration. Nitrification above 50% was achieved, and total nitrogen removal was near 38%. Results of nitrogen were obtained in a flow injection analysis (FIA) system. Mean cell residence time appeared to be more important to nitrification than the suspended solids concentration in the reactor
