Relações familiares, adolescencia, genero e representações sociais de adolescentes




This study focuses on the social representations of adolescents in terms of their farnily relations and in reference to their age, aspects which provide them with the notion of being a man or a woman. ln this regard the study was guided by the following question: which social representations about gender are constructed by adolescent between 14 and 17 years of age within the context of their daily family lives and as part of deterrnined age category, adolescence. Aspects of farnily relations as well as aspects of adolescence constituted the lirnits given to the analysis of the process of construction of adolescents social representation of gender. Six instruments were used for data collection: a questionnaire on farnily situation, taped serni-open interviews, a TÍtten composition by the subjects, and focal group sessions. The various research instruments allowed for more detailed analysis and data correlations. The study sample consists of twenty-six adolescent girls and sixteen boys who participated in the project through an invitation extended to more than 100 adolescents ofboth sexes. In this way, the study pretended to emphasize a qualitative approach even though the quantitative aspects were also preserved since the universe considered was of adolescents in the first year of secondary education of a private school in the city of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. Gender appears as an anchoring element present in all the social representations of the individuaIs at the same time that it, itself, has significant differences with regards to being a man or a woman, being masculine ar ferninine. If gender is considered as an anchoring element in social representation studies it is because this was present in the farnily relations of the adolescents and in their relations with other adolescents. The study included substantive aspects of everyday farnily life, in its adolescent form and how gender appears in the constitution of substantive social representation derivations
