RESUMO

The objective of this research was to analyze the Catholic Community Shalom using weberians concepts of adaptation and worlds rejection. To reach this goal, a description of the community was formalized after observing its practices and structure. Initially, an historical survey of the Shalom Community was made based on its published materials (books, magazines, texts form its website), and later based on the daily observation of the community - especially in its mission located at the city of Brasília. Shalom Community, as well as the other New Communities, was born with the changes occurred in the last few decades in the religious field and Catholic Church in Brazil. Even thought there are some priests, its formation is composed basically of laypeople. Shalom Community has two specific characteristics: (1) its attention is focused on individual questions, and (2) its religious practices present strong mystical aspects, besides that Shalom proposes the process of continuous formation for its members. Shalom rejection to the world is marked by putting in practice some particular aspects of the Catholic Church doctrine. The form of adaptation to the world is the newness of Shalom Community, once it can not totally remove its members from the world, the alternative found was offering to the members a life style that allows a minimum contact with the world.
