RESUMO

The aim of this thesis is to supply references for designers and users of computer interfaces for visually impaired persons. Todo this, the paper begins with an explanation on the importance that human-computer interfaces have on computational systems and on the factors (human, software and hardware) involved in their design, always pointing out the user as the main element of the systems. However, the existing bibliography on human-computer interfaces does not apply directly to the problems ofthe visually impaired person s interaction with such equipment, as will be described along the text, based on specialized literature. With the purpose of helping those designers who wish to develop such interfaces and the users wishing to acquire computer interfaces which visually impaired persons may access, 74 guidelines are presented. They were obtained by compiling the standards and guidelines for interfaces in general and for specific interfaces (consumer products, hardware and software) for visually impaired persons. To compare what was presented, based on information from other Countries, with the reality found in Brazil, a survey was done, in the form of a questionaire, for visually impaired professionals in the area of data handling and processing, working in companies in the state of São Paulo, results which are also presented in this thesis. Finally, an appendix presents data on some devices of computer interaction designed to visually impaired persons, as found on the intemational market, having the intention of propagating such information which is little known by the Brazilian visually impaired community
