RESUMO

The dissemination of new technologies based on microelectronics gave rise to a new phase of competition, in which new elements such tacit knowledge and technological qualification assume strategic importance. The pattem of use of labor is thus increasingly determined at company leveI. The so-called new forms of labor management are the synthesis of strategies that seek to combine new technologies with multivalent forms of labor use, in order to obtain flexibility in production and organization in a specific competitive environrnent. However, the process of building competitive advantages is limited by territorial, regional and sectorial differences. Competitiveness factors, such as economic policy and institutional pattems of labor use affect the way firms combine available resources, labor included, so as to obtain better results in the competitive environrnent. Assuming that the competitive environrnent in which automotive firm operate has recently demanded new standards of quality, productivity and flexibility, due to its increasingly intemationalized dynamics, a correlation can be drawn between these factors and tendencies found in the aggregate data. The changes in productivity recently experienced by automotive sector may have been the result of productivity rationalization strategies intended to downsize the production structure and empower the worker to manQe aualitv.
