RESUMO

The ozonolysis is reported of 10 M aqueous solutions of the following phenolic compounds: phenol, m-cresol, p-cresol, pyrocathecol, resorcinol and hydroquinone. The initial concentration of all these compounds were reduced at least 40%. A commercial ozone generator was employed. Using spectrophotometric techniques in the U.V. region, the formation of intermediate reactions products, with absorption peaks in the 250 - 260 nm region, was observed. The presence of carbonyl groups was assertained for these intermediate compounds. The ozonolysis of these compounds were faster in basic media at pHs of about 10 or 11. The oxidation of the above phenolic compounds was studied with another oxidizing agent - KMnO4, at 1,5 mM concentrations. Almost total transformations of the initial phenolic compounds was observed . The addition of Ca++ ions was found to be necessary in order to aid the precipitation of manganese dioxide. We also determined the stoichiometry necessary for the treatment of each compound. We did not detect the formation of intermediate reaction compounds through the technique utilysed.
