RESUMO

The purpose of this research was to evaluate if there is a quantitative difference in the degree of apical radicular resorption between teeth wich are treated endodontically and teeth with pulpal vitality when submitted to orthodontic movement. There were 32 premolars fram male and female patients, varying fram 13 to 18 years of age. For the maxillary teeth, 8 first premolars of right side were part of the ContraI Group, and were submitted to an orthodontic intrusion force with 180g of intensity for a period of 90 days, with activations every 30 days. The Experimental Group was composed of 8 first premolars of the left side, that before the aplication of the intrusion force, were submitted to endodontic treatment. For the mandibular teeth there was an equal distribuition for the Experimental and Control Groups. The length of the teeth were compared before and after orthodontic movement by the use of periapicals X rays analysed by the sistem of digitalized images "DI GORA". The results demonstrated that relating to the maxillary teeth, there was a significandy greater degree of apical radicular resorption in the teeth with pulpal vitality in relation to the teeth under endodontic treatment (p<0,01). Relation to the mandibular teeth even thought it was detected a tendency toward a greater resorption in the teeth with pulpal vitality, this difference was not significant when the two groups were compared
