RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine through stereologic analysis, the incidence of root resorption on dogs teeth, with experimentally induced chronic periapical lesions, orthodontically moved immediatly after the endodontic treatment and 40 days after the endodontic treatment. Premolars of 5 dogs, a total of 80 roots, were divided into 5 groups: Group I, teeth under induced chronic periapical lesions and orthodontically moved 40 days after the end of the endodontic treatment; Group II, teeth with chronic lesions induced at the same days as in Group I, that were not orthodontically moved (positive control group); Group III, teeth that underwent induced chronic lesions and were orthodontically moved immediately after the end of the endodontic treatment; Group IV, teeth with chronic lesions induced at the same days as in Group III, that were not orthodontically moved (positive control group) and Group V the hygid teeth (control group). In all cases the calcium hydroxide-based root canal dressing was used and the canals were filled with gutta-percha cones and AH Plus sealer. After the experimental period, the animals were killed by anesthetic overdose and the obtained specimens were fixed and embedded in paraffin. Stereological evaluation of root resorption was performed on the 5m thick hematoxylin-eosin-stained sections. The results were submitted to statistical general linear models and the level of significance chosen was 5%. When comparing the resorption areas of Groups I, II and V, it was observed that Group I showed greater percentage of resoption areas (p=0.0021); comparing the results of Groups III, IV and V, it was noticed that Group III showed more resorption areas (p=0.0018). But there was no statistical difference when comparing the results of Groups I and III (p=0.5924). According to the results, teeth presenting experimentally induced periapical lesion, orthodontically moved immediately after endodontic treatment had percentage areas of resorption similar to those moved 40 days after the endodontic treatment. Yet, the orthodontic movement increased the percentage of root resorption areas.
