RESUMO

The objective of this paper was to look into the origins of the teaching organization in Brazil, in the early stages of its colonization, taking into consideration the political strenghts under1ying the socioeconomic and cultural movement at that time. Therefore, during the development of the research, the author tried to examine the private history of the Brazilian society within the context of the Portuguese mercantilism, and the burden deriving from its gap in relation to the more developed Europe. The study of the Society of Jesus, and of the way they went on building their conception of teaching based on the performance of their teachers in the several schools located in different countries of Europe, enabled the understanding of how this teaching system was implemented in Portugal and how it was implemented adapted to the Brazilian colony. The research allowed to identify in the Brazilian education system, organized by the Jesuits in the beginnings of the Portuguese colonialism in Brazil, the legacy of the classical culture in the conception and establishment of the teaching disciplines and of the school organization as it occurred in the medieval Universities
