RESUMO

This work quantifies the CO2 emissions from energy use of natural gas, alcohol and oil derived products at a national and regional level and evaluates the impacts of eventual policies for emissions control. The results pointed the connection between the activity level and the emissions of CO2 for each energy input considered for Brazil as a whole and for its six regions detailing the portion of the total emissions caused by final demand, interindustry consumption and household consumption. This analysis was complemented by the calculation of the emissions elasticities related to a percent change in final demand, which made possible to access the total and distributive impacts on each sector. Through these impacts were possible to identify the key-sectors regarding to the emissions from each one of the energy inputs in Brazil as a whole and in each one of its regions. The model was also used to make simulations in order to evaluating the economic effects (in each sector located in each area) of a hypothetic control on emissions. The work also investigated the effects on prices of a hypothetical emissions tax and the trade off between employment generation and emissions.
