RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Esthetics is to be found in all societies and has an ultimate importance for people. It is seen differently according to the culture and may bring on specific negative or positive effects on the bio-psycho-social dimension. Esthetics has a considerable bearing upon both Subjective Well-being and Quality of Life (QoL). OBJECTIVES: To investigate changes in QoL of a sample of individuals from the Remanescent Community of Quilombo de Furnas do Dionísio, after the implantation of Partial and Temporary Removable Prosthesis (PPRT). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Clinical validation before and one month after the installation of the PPRT, in a voluntary sample of 31 individuals (17 males; 14 females) who presented lack of, at least, one superior incisive tooth. The following instruments: Quality of Life Questionnaire The Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short-Form Health Survey, and an Odontological schedule by which personal, clinical and odontological data were collected, and the subjects photographed. Both instruments were applied and photographs taken before and after the installation of the prosthesis within a one-month period. RESULTS: Most subjects were married (67,7%), Ý 35 years (58%), age peaked at 41 to 45 years (22,6%). Most individuals did not present any clinical problem (38,7%). However 19,4% had high blood pressure and problems due to alcoholism and smoking. Before the use of the prosthesis (PPRT) the participants without clinical complaints showed a better QoL in all the domains as compared to those with clinical problems. Both groups had an increase in QoL after the use of the PPRT. The functional capacity domain of QoL presented the least variation before and after the use of the PPRT, whereas the physical aspect displayed the biggest variation for both gender. All the domains of QoL (SF-36), except for general health status and vitality, positively correlated within themselves. As a whole, QoL of the participants increased after the use of the PPRT. Male participants presented better QoL (before and after) than their female counterparts. However, all the participants, independently of the gender, had an overall increase in their QoL after the use of the PPRT, thus revealing that a change in oral esthetics had a positive effect in QoL. The major effect was in physical aspects, pain, general health status, vitality, social aspects and mental health. CONCLUSION: Oral esthetics positively affected most of the QoL domains relating to physical or mental aspects.
