RESUMO

The modern vision of management considers that a company should attend the needs of several interested people, such as: clients, stock holders, staffs and society. The company should also evaluate its results through several perspectives, besides the financial one, also considering aspects related to public responsibility, innovation, organizational environment, relationship with suppliers etc. The function also has developed along the time and it is constantly requested to give its contribution to the improvement of the company results in several aspects, besides those responsibilities that the function maintenance was in charge of, in the past. The evaluation and measurement of performance is a mechanism of support to the management in the sense of controlling and improving results. The system of measurement and evaluation of performance, utilized by the majority of the companies, uses indicators that makes possible the comparison of expected results standards with the real performance. A set of performance indicators that involves several perspectives, and that is aligned with the company strategy, may contribute so that the process of taking decisions has, as a support, significant information, making it less subjective and permitting it to adapt the processes to the strategy and to the reality in which the company is found. The objective of this work is the proposition of a set of performance indicators related to the maintenance of a rail passengers public transport company, based on a well known methodology, that supply the managers with information that may help them to improve their processes as well as to compare themselves with other pertinent referential. This work also presents some methodologies related to the theme and a relationship of performance indicator
