RESUMO

Human resources are one of the fundamental elements for the implementation of a new healthcare model in Brazil. To provide a complete healthcare service, it is necessary to have an interdisciplinary team consisting of people with various technical backgrounds in the area of health. Among the various healthcare professionals, we consider the psychologist as a social actor who can contribute to the group in relation to the health actions carried out with families and the community. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a working schedule for the psychologist, in which previous ideas can be questioned and new health actions enabled, according to the principles of Primary Health Care PHC. This research proposes a summary of the required skills of the psychologist for the work process in Primary Health Care, and describes the essential abilities for a practice that is centered on the principles of the PHC and SUS Sistema Único de Saúde (the Brazilian national healthcare system). A qualitative study was carried out, with three stages: the first stage consisted of the analysis of eight technical documents related to the psychologists skills for the PHC working process; the second involved intentional sample interviews with two psychologists, lecturers and researchers in the area of collective health; and the third observed the working process of two psychologists practicing in the Family Health Program. The data was analyzed through content analysis, dividing the content into groups and categories. The results of the study enable us to outline the operational, conceptual, methodological and behavioral skills. We suggest a summary of operating skills which include specific working processes of the psychologist such as: Individual healthcare, family healthcare and home visitation, and working processes shared with the health team, including: teamwork, community healthcare; territories; local council, joint actions between sectors, and planning/organizing
