RESUMO

The thermal design of air cooled heat sinks assembled on top of microprocessors is considered in this work. The heat sinks are assumed to be made longitudinal fins of rectangular cross section with a forced airflow. The cross section of the duct may be larger than of the heat sink, so that there is a bypass of the airflow between the heat sink and the walls of the duct -just part of the airflow occurs in the interfin spacing. This effect causes strong influence on the thermal performance of the heat sinks. Two models of analysis based on empirical and theorical correlations were implemented in two distinct computational programs. Their results were compared with experimental data from the literature. One model present better results and was employed in a parametric procedure to optimize the design of a heat sink. The selection of the thermal design considered two distinct alternatives in addition to the capability of the heat sink to dissipate a required thermal load below a maximum operating temperature. One optimization criterion was the minimum thermal resistance from the base of the heat sink to the air flow and the other, the minimum amount of material of the heat sink. The results obtained indicate that, compared to the case without bypass of the airflow, the presence of the bypass increases the options of the optimal thermal design of the heat sinks
