RESUMO

GEISENHOFF, Luciano Oliveira. Crisphead lettuce production using double face mulching, under different soil water tensions, in Lavras, MG. 2008. 77p. Dissertation (Master in Agricultural Engineering/Water Engineering and soil) - Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA), Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Lettuce is the main horticultural plant in Brazil, both in terms of production and consumption. Minas Gerais and SÃo Paulo are the major producing and consuming states. Stimulated mainly by fast food chain restaurants, and by presenting all-year-round favorable climatic cultivation conditions as well as by being located near big consuming centers, Minas Geraisâs southern region has become one of the most outstanding sites for crisphead lettuce exploration. Being a water-nutrient demanding culture, itâs recommended that its cultivation be done in greenhouse environment along with mulching and located irrigation. The irrigationâs appropriate management is not only important for supplying the plantâs hydraulic needs but also for minimizing problems with diseases, nutrient lixiviation and unnecessary water and energy expenditures. With the aim of defining criteria concerning the irrigation management, this work has been developed in order to evaluate different soil water tensions on the productive behavior of the crisphead, cv. RaiderâPlus, in a greenhouse environment, by using mulching, in Lavras â MG. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse at the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA), according to a randomized block design with four replications. The treatments constituted of five soil water tensions that act as indicators of the exact irrigation moment. The tensions were pre-established at 12, 25, 35, 45, and 70 kPa. The results showed that, in order to obtain desirable values of total and commercial fresh mass, 844 g.plant-1 and 631 g.plant-1, respectively, as well as a good product quality (low disease incidence), the irrigation must be done when the soil water tensions are around 25 kPa, measured at a depth of 12,5 cm. The cultureâs productivity decreased linearly as a function of soil water tension increase at a 12 to 70 kPa interval. The same linear decrease happened to plant height as well as to commercial and total head fresh mass, and to the commercial head circumference. The maximum efficiency in the use of water (473,44 kg.ha-1 .mm-1) was obtained at a tension of 50,3 kPa.
