RESUMO
Abstract This paper focuses on the problems of translation, understood as a cross-linguistic and intercultural activity that involves making decisions not only on the linguistic (structural) level, but also at the level of communicative and performative language. In order to cover these two levels, we have selected, on the one hand, two grammar categories in Toba and Maka languages, which encode non referential and pragmatic meaning, and may therefore pose a difficulty in the translating process, resulting in the loss of essential meanings. Such categories are: possessive classifiers and evidenciality. On the other hand, we have chosen two rhetorical features connected with specific discursive genres which show that Toba and Maka verbal art have their own patterns and organization, even if they seem erratic or random. These rhetorical features are: prosodic structure in Toba advice and repetition of discursive connectors in Toba and Maka narratives. At the same time, the theoretical interest in this work is to reflect on the model of language that is implied in both linguistic description and translation. The analysis is based on a first-hand corpus made up of different oral genres collected by ourselves in several fieldwork experiences in Gran Chaco Region.
