RESUMO

The study of epidemiologic type was developed with the participation of adolescents of both genders, between 14 and 18 years old, attending classes and regularly enrolled at public and private schools in São Caetano do Sul, in 2003. The aim of the study was to identify the prevalence use of techniques or chemical substances with the intention of modeling the body by adolescents of both genders and its relation to the practice of physical and sportive extra-curricular activities; the intention of this use; knowledge about risks; satisfaction and dissatisfaction with the body; parents educational level and differences in use according to gender. AlI the adolescents present in the date of the research were simultaneously submitted, to a list of self-response questions. The number of students in the study corresponds to 18,64% of the population of the city at the same age (n=2219), being 48,72% women and 51,28% men. The instrument of research was composed by 71 multiple choice questions, and its results were put in a database system, allowing the use of a statistics calculation software (SPSS, version 7.5). The study of variables was done with the non-parametric test, chi-esquare, considering 95% as confidence intervals. The results show there are significant statistic differences according to the variation of gender. On one hand, the incidence of men who practice physical or sportive extra-curricular activities was X2= 122,65, gl=1, P<0,001. On the other hand, the use of techniques and substances to lose weight was bigger among women (X2= 208,31, gl=1, P<0,001). The use of androgenic anabolic steroids was bigger among men (3,7%) and presenting statistic significant difference in comparison to women (0,9%) (X2= 19,36, gl=1, P<0,001), confirming the data of several international studies dealing with the theme. No significant differences were found for the use of chemical substances or techniques with esthetic intention among men and women. It was identified a high level of adolescents who did not know about the consequences of adopting these alternatives, as among users or non-users. No significant differences were found for parents educational level and the use of alternatives for body modeling presented to the adolescents. These data allow us to consider that the practice of sports is not a preponderant factor in the adoption of these techniques and substances. In fact, this kind of behavior is related to the need of modeling the body in order to deal with the cultural demands of the Brazilian society
