RESUMO

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in women in the third trimester of pregnancy. Methods: In total, 340 women attending the prenatal clinic at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, State University of Campinas (Unicamp) were selected. Results: Overall, 329 women (96.8%) presented LUTS: 80.6% presented nocturia, 70.3% urinary frequency, 52.0% post-micturition dribbling, 50.0% stress urinary incontinence (SUI), 46.9% incomplete emptying sensation and 44.4% urgency. One hundred fifty-seven women reported that LUTS were severe enough to cause social or hygienic problem. No statistic correlation has been observed between LUTS and route of delivery or parity but, when considering distinct efforts that lead to SUI and parity, cough and laughter presented a statistically significant (p = 0.0478 and p = 0.00460, respectively). The Prevalence Ratio (PR) revealed that parous women with four or more deliveries have had 1.4 times more risk to present SUI at cough or sneeze and 2.0 times more risk to leak urine at laughter compared to nulliparous women. Conclusion: The conclusion was that there is a very high prevalence of urinary symptoms in the third trimester of pregnancy in our population, although it does not correlate to either parity or route of delivery.
