RESUMO

A cross sectional epidemiological study with probabilistic random sample of Campinas bus drivers is presented with the following objectives: 1) to estimate prevalence of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL); 2) to verify the association between the cases of NIHL and hypertension; and also the possible association of NIHL with demographics, social-economics, smoking habits, occupational and morbid variables. In 1991 a sample of 108 bus drivers was studied. A questionnaire was used to get a detailed professional history, clinical and audiometric exams that were done to measure the arterial blood pressure and to get, in accordance with Merluzzi classification, NIHL diagnosis. The possible associations between the cases of NIHL and variables described above were verified using ?2 association test. Univariate and multivariate analysis were done using logistic regression model. The prevalence for NIHL was 32,7% of the total examined people (104) with CI95%[23,7; 41,7]. The variables that were associated with NIHL in univariate analysis were: age (p=0,005); time worked as urban bus driver (p=0,03); relate of exposure to chemical products with metals (p=0,03) and the history of tinitus (p=0,04). After multivariate analysis, two possible models were identified: 1) with urban time and metals exposure and 2) with age and metals exposure. The chosen model was the one that considers the time worked as urban bus drivers because it?s the unique noise professional exposure marker with biologic plausibility for NIHL. There are evidences that the time worked as urban bus driver and the exposure to chemical products with metals are associated with the prevalence of bus driver?s NIHL, but this result should be seen cautiously once the study design does not allows for interpreting this association as being of causal nature
