RESUMO

Atlantic Forest in north of Paraná State Brazil has been almost completely depleted since the first half of XX century. Nowadays, only a few native forest remnants remains, most in private lands. The Godoy State Park is one of the biggest and most representative fragments that are left, and it is under governmental protection. This study aimed to asses population sizes and habitat use parameters for Psittacidae species occurring in this remnant. Density information was obtained using the association of three methods: line transects (TET), distance sampling within points (VCPM) and an instant count of parrots with six simultaneous observers (MCI). All methods were applied for a 12 months period and density estimates and/or abundance indexes were obtained for 10 of the 11 species previously recorded for this area. The reserve were categorized in two distinct forest types, with marked habitat differences. Line transects and VCPM showed similar patterns and differences of habitat use for most of the parrot species within this two habitat types. Seasonallity influenced three of nine species analyzed. Habitat features in all points sampled were collected and analyzed by an multivariate statistical analysis (PCA). Most species were associated to large trees, eight species presented associations with dense vegetation cover and two to declivity and more open areas. The high population estimates and frequency of use on the north portion of this remnant shows that this area might be of greater relevance for local parrot conservation than the whole fragment itself. Nevertheless, it is recommended that efforts should be directed towards conserving this remnant, and also other smaller non-protected fragments around it, in order to sustain psittacine populations on one of the last large forest reserves in north of Parana State.
