RESUMO

When we thought about public security, what was seen was an increase in the number of Police cars, more Police officers being hired, and more equipment. In this context, Police officers were not observed, although they are the main actors of social peace. Due to this need to study the professional identity of Police officers of the Federal District of Brazil, an instrument was constructed and validated. The Scale of Professional Identity of Military Police Officers (SPIMP), developed under the Social Identity Theory, showed five factors: (1) Institutional environment and favorable professional; (2) Conflictive work relationship; (3) Openness at work; (4) Police vocation; and (5) Professional and social respect. The analyses of the relationships between the factors and demographic variables allowed the interpretation and validity investigation of the identified constructs, beyond the suggestion of a prediction model. The study also provides a description of the identity construction of the participating Police officers. The method used was based in the psychological instruments model of Pasquali (2010). Theoretical procedures included a literature review, semi-structured interviews with 12 Military Police officers coming from specialized and common work unities, which lead to the item construction. Empirical procedures involved a quantitative phase of data collection, with 600 valid responses. The validation of the internal structure of the instrument was done through an exploratory factor analysis, and the item analyses were done for each factor individually, as those analyses presuppose unidimensionality of the aptitude under investigation. These analyses were developed based on the Traditional Psychometric Techniques (TCT), as well as the Item Response Theory (IRT). The analyses of the relationships between the factors and demographic variables were done with analyses of variance, correlation, and multiple regressions.
