RESUMO

This is a descriptive study focused on teenagers who violently and are also victims of violence, an increasing phenomenon in Brazil. The data was collected from files of adolescents inmates at Unidade de Internação Grandes Lagos, during the year of 2003, living in the city of São José do Rio Preto. Variables were selected such as place of residence, age, schooling, ethnicity, infractional acts, place where infractional acts were committed, psychotropic drugs, and the adolescents work activities. In relations to the family, the variables selected were: family income, schooling of parents, type of job, the use of psychotropic drugs, and diseases in the family. The main results revealed social-demographic, infractional and relational profile of a significant number of teenagers around 17 years of age with incomplete grade schooling. It was also revealed that the teenagers had been expelled from school, did not have a professional occupation, and were residents of the lowest income region in São José do Rio Preto. It was observed that the infraction committed with greatest percentage was robbery; followed by theft, attempted homicide, qualified robbery, drug dealing, and robbery leading to death. In addition, it was observed that these infractions happened in the northern neighborhoods, which is the lowest income region in São José do Rio Preto. The results also revealed that of the psychotropic drugs used, the maiority of teenagers did tobacco and marijuana, and a large part consumed alcoholic beverages and crack. Cocaine, thinner, and glue were used ina smaller proportion. The results converged to a social reality characterized by a large demographic index of the region with a lack of social equipment. The fact that the adolescent is part of a family which is dysfunctional in its structure, has low income, parents have no schooling or professional work, and they abuse of alcohol is a summation that results in the teenager being the premature victims of the system. The mother, typically is the purveyor of the household and also the strongest presence during the period of depriving freedom. She is the main mediator between the teenagers in conflict with the law, the judicial power, and the community. According to these findings the study focused on supporting public power and society in the formulation of public health politics and inter-complementary actions directed to a character: the adolescent, who is a subject of rights and not an object of protection because in a given moment he transgressed the law. With that said, the supposition remains: teenagers practive violence and are also victims of the same.
