RESUMO

The dental caries is the illness that presents high prevalence related to oral health, requiring adequated planning of actions and oral health services, starting by the survey of its prevalence. The aim of this study was describe the epidemiological survey performed by the State of São Paulo in the mid-west region, in 1998. The number of cities which participated in the study was eight, from the region called DIR X, with the utilization of the DMFT index, at 12 years old, according the size of the city and the presence or ausence of fluoride. The data were obtained originally from the mentioned DIR. The sample was composed by 485 scholarships both gender, distributed by the cities. The dental caries was high in the male gender, for all the cities, except Pongai. The dental caries prevalence in the cities of medium size, Barra Bonita=6.47 and Pederneiras=7.06, are above the values observed it in Brazil on 1986. The cities of big size with and without fluoride start to show the phenomenom of the "polarization" of dental caries, the pattern of the illness did not present differences statistically significants. The city of Jaú, considered of big size and without fluoride, has the water fluoridation supply stoped by 7 years, but did not present any increasing in the prevalence of dental caries in the children. Possible, after the introduction of the fluoridated toothpaste, it was observed dental caries declining, marked by the action of the ingestion of other sources of fluoride and the presence of effect "halo". Such uptake of fluoride has undertook, in any way, the ausence of the fluoridation water to drink. The oral health conditions of the students, in Jaú, presented better in the permanent tooth comparing with the students living in Bauru (fluoridated). The cities of big size present the dental caries epidemiological profile similar to that observed in the develloped countries, independent of the interruption in the public water fluoridation supply.
