RESUMO

Paternal image is one of the most important symbolic references in family and society which interfere in the development of personality. Drawing from an analysis of archetypical images of the father, of father-like symbols and complexes, this thesis clarifies the particularity, extent, and impact of paternal roles in the formation of their childrens subjectivity. In order to understand the development and manifestations of the symbol of paternity, the author initially examines the origins of patriarchate in Greek mythology and in Hebrew history. Following, the author presents a contemporary paternal image. The author also uses theoretical tools of analytical psychology in order to understand psychic phenomena that contribute in the drama of a father-son relationship. In an attempt to understand the fall of the contemporary paternal image, the author proposes the hypothesis that humanity finds itself in an archetypical and symbolic transition, where as the concept of patriarchate declines the cycle of alterity is encouraged. The emergence of this new symbol does not exclude the importance of the paternal image, but deeply alters human relationships, demanding from fathers the recreation of their role and task.
