RESUMO

Vila Boas 19th century Holy Week is herein approached as articulating discoursive practice from different fields of symbolic production, marked by dionysiac and theatrical rhetoric which reminds of the visual feasts baroque configuration, settling the question as representation of political, cultural and social projects. It is therefore understood that the distinct dimensions of Vila Boas society in the eighteen hundreds are revealed embedded in the celebrations of the Paschal Mystery: power in its political and religious branches, the social tissue portrayed by those who play the parts of prosecutors, actors and audience; the aesthetic dimension depicted by the various artistic lingoes articulated with the drama of the Passion. Pivotal to this proposition is the notion of depiction and theatricalazation of the social relations. Put differently, it is championed that in addition to the Passion of Christ, what is played on the streets is also the representation of the multiple human passions, made visible by means of the processional choreography. It is therefore sought to identify and clarify the forces that updated Goiás towns Holy Week in the 19th century. Along these lines, questions related to the conflicts between devotional and ecclesiastical Catholicism and the tension between tradition and change are approached; the validation of powers and privileges and the wish for social acknowledgement represented by the symbolic disputes fought between the different groups within the hierarchized space of the processions. The scenic, visual and musical apparatus which distinguish the Holy Week as a baroque visual feast is analyzed as well, from the standpoint of the text-context articulation. The aforementioned apparatus is taken not as mere decorative element, but rather as inherent to the makeup of the festal time and to the rhetoric of seduction
