RESUMO

Propolis is a resinous and balsamic material made by bees from the exudate of trees, branches, pollen and flowers. ItÂs used by bees to protect the hive, being the most important âchemical weaponâ against pathogenic microorganisms. Propolis has been very studied due to its pharmacological properties: antimicrobial, antiinflamatory, antioxidant, cicatrizationenhancing, among others. It is variable and complex chemical composition and depends of the flora of each region visited by the bees. Some constituents found are flavonoids, aromatic acids and esters, aldehydes and e ketones, terpenoids and phenylpropanoids, among others. The present work had for objective the padronization of the red propolis extract from Pernambuco, including its phytochemistry characterization, seasonal study, validation of the analytical method for the assay of the total flavonoids and phenols and avaliation of the antimicrobial activity of the propolis ethanol extracts. In the phytochemistry study, it was evidenced the presence of flanovoids, athracenic derivatives, mono and sesquiterpens beyond triterpens, steroids and sugars. In the seasonal study, made with samples of the months February, June and October, 2006, propolis showed good quality, with prominence for the sample of October, que apresentou a higher level of total flavonoids. The results gotten in the validation of the analytical method had been dealt statistically by Analysis of Variance oneway (ANOVA) and by Studentâs t-test. The method demonstrated to take care of to requirements claimed by actual legislation, RE n 899, of the National Agency of Sanitary Vigilance, being accurate and precise. The avaliation of the antimicrobial activity of the red propolis was realized by the single disk method and bioautography. The activity was observed against Gram-positive microorganisms and in the bioautography was observed that this activity must it the flavonoids presents in the sample
