RESUMO

This work focuses on the political concepts of people from Riachão do Jacuípe-BA, through the narratives of some conflicts that took place in the city in the 1990s, the period of the work of Catholic Priest José Silvino dos Santos. He practiced an evangelical libertarianism, based on the Social Doctrine of the Church. This evangelical libertarianism, with a leaning in favor of poor people and social justice, created problems for the powerful politicians of the city, in power for over 3 decades and accustomed to the support and friendship of the priests. To understand the meaning and political practices of the people from Riachão do Jacuípe, I did 60 interviews, and did research in the archives of the Municipal House of the Representatives and in the Municipal Catholic Church records. At first, I discuss the ideas related to the underdevelopment of the city in the 1990s. Then, I work with the formation of memory of the time of harmony, a period before the arrival of Father Silvino, when customs and religious traditions were strong and politicians and priests were friends. Finally, I discuss the time of conflict, strongly considered as the cause of disruption between politicians, priests and the population. Thats when the phrase priests should not involve themselves in politics became popular.
